A newbie from France

I must confess, I was a big fan of 80's / early 90's JLP... [img]redface.gif[/img] [img]wink.gif[/img]

While it was highly formulaic classical-jazz-rock by today's standard [intro / head chorus, [often] odd-time verse [solo [img]wink.gif[/img] ]; repeat twice, bridge; repeat verse & chorus, out - you get the gist of what I'm trying to say ;c) ], he was one of the first to do so & always had HIGHLY compitent musicians, prob even higher than himself [even though as strictly a musician himself, he is very accomplished]...

His live shows were always consistent & high standard...

Saw him first in the early-to-mid-80s w Casey Scheuerell on kit, & Scott Henderson of Tech on gtr...great show...then in mid-to-late 80's w Sonny Emory on kit, Scott again on gtr...both great live experiences...

Of course, these shows were nothing like JLP's later afro stylings...except for JLP's solos themselves [img]wink.gif[/img]

Eh, well, i guess he was just "going for it" [a diff approach]...[taking a chance]...

Well, I have to say that it's not because you don't feel touched by this music that there is not emotion here.

And why do you want compare Zappa with Ponty, come on Man...

Also "Afro-Jazz-Fusion" is a kind of music that you can find very easily in Paris because there is a lot of african people there, it's like you can hear a lot of latin music in Florida because there is a lot of spanish people and Cuba close...
Anyway, "African-Jazz-Fusion" is really not some roots in the french music industry.

You should read Eymelin's posts more carefully ! He is not the one comparing Ponty to Zappa. He is really showing that Zappa is closer to French composer Boulez. These two are and were way over most musicians, including Ponty. But don't get me wrong. Ponty is one of the best jazz violinists in the world.

As for your remark that 75% French Music "sucks", please note that 75% of most Countries produce mediocre music, including North American. That is why we are privileged to listen to the remaining 25%.

Another thing to remember: Most of the best musical compositions we listen to, especially members of this forum, is composed of influences from around the world ! The idea is to be "open" to the richness of todays "world" music. Being able to fuse cultures from around the globe in our music.

Take note: that in France like here in America, we are not spoiled by most radio stations. You have to look for the music that inspires you.

However, i disagree w ONE comment - "jazz violinist"...to me, JLP is not a "jazz" violinist, but rather, a great "classical-fusion-rock" violinist [perhaps influenced somewhat by jazz]...who's played w some great jazz-&-fusion musicians... Comme l'ont fait remarqu? Groovissimo et Fuse01, je ne comparais pas Jean-Luc Ponty ? Franck Zappa et de m?me ni n'affirmais que la tentative fa?te par Ponty de m?langer musique Africaine et Fusion faisait partie de la tradition Fran?aise.

Quant l'indigence de 75% de la production musicale, elle est tout aussi valable aux Etats-Unis qu'en France.

J'aime la chanson Fran?aise car j'aime les textes qui chez les grands artistes ont une port?e ?motive amha plus grande que la musique elle-m?me que ce soit chez Manset, Brel, Ferrat, Nougaro, Cabrel, F?rr? ou Ferrat.
